On behalf of the Moggill Creek Catchment Group Committee I would like to warmly welcome you as a new member of the Moggill Creek Catchment Group. As a volunteer community action group working to conserve and improve the natural environment of the Moggill Creek catchment, I thank you for your support and trust that you will enjoy and gain benefit from your membership.
For your information, this provides a summary of the key Moggill Creek Catchment Group activities, events, services and publications that occur throughout the year, providing members with a wide variety of ways to participate and interact with catchment conservation efforts and awareness.
Whether you are new to the area or have been a local for a little or a long time, we encourage you to get in touch with us, meet some new friends, join in our activities and learn something new about your local environment.
Bushcare Groups
Regular monthly working bees are a core activity of the Moggill Creek Catchment Group. We work with Habitat Brisbane (Brisbane City Council) to restore native vegetation on public land. With 12 active section groups across the catchment, mostly along creeks – there is likely to be one near you. Our working bees generally involve clearing of weeds, planting of native trees and shrubs and ongoing maintenance of the replanted zones and provide a great opportunity to meet your neighbours and other catchment locals. If you would like to join in on one of our working bees or have any questions please refer to the section leaders and working bee contacts list as well as catchment sections map available on our website
Native plant nursery
Our native plant nursery operates at the end of Gold Creek Road on the Gold Creek Dam Reserve and provides members of the Moggill Creek and Pullen Pullen Catchment Groups with free local native plants to use in revegetation projects. The nursery started from small beginnings in 1999 and is now a substantial operation, providing around 15,000 plants to members every year.
A number of our members enjoy working in our nursery – working bees are generally held on the first and third Mondays of each month, 9 am to 12 noon and coincide with the nursery opening times for members. If you would like to help at the nursery or collect free local plants for your revegetation project please contact Andrew Wilson.
Rehabilitation of private land
As a service to landholders, our Landcare Advisor, Damien Egan is available to visit properties on request to advise on land and vegetation management, species identification and weed control. For more information on landcare activities visit our website.
The Cottage
Also located on the Gold Creek Dam Reserve close to the Nursery is the Moggill Creek Catchment Group Environmental Centre, fondly called ‘the Cottage’. It is situated in a delightful spot. First opened in 2008, the Cottage acts as our headquarters and houses a library of books and resources relevant to local biodiversity, with facilities to cater for seminars, talks and meetings of up to 25 people. Key events
We hold a wide range of events for our members and wider community throughout the year with our key annual flagship events being:
Community displays and stalls – throughout the year we host stalls at key locations and events including the Brookfield Show to promote catchment conservation efforts and awareness
- Quarterly talks – four times a year we invite a guest speaker to present to our members on environmental interest topics relevant to the catchment
- Kid’s Day at the Cottage – held in June, this very popular free annual event has a focus on activities that engage, entertain and inform children about their local environment and its biodiversity.
- Platypus Survey – each year in September a group of ‘platy-watchers’ undertake an annual survey at observation posts along the Moggill and Gold Creeks
- Photography Competition – held in October, we invite digital photo entries taken within Brisbane and Ipswich catchments and hold a public exhibition. The competition covers a wide range of categories with some great cash prizes up for grabs
- Annual General Meeting – held in November, the AGM provides members with the opportunity to reflect on the year that was, thank our volunteers and outgoing committee members and welcome in our new committee for the coming year. The AGM also includes a guest speaker presentation.
Website and social media
You can find out more about us on our website www.moggillcreek.org and follow us on Facebook and Instagram. Both provide information about our flora and fauna as well as some of our more damaging weeds and how they can be controlled. Our website also has a “News” section, which we try to keep up-to-date.
Public liability and accident insurance
In accordance with the legal requirements of the Office of Fair Trading for Incorporated Associations, we inform all members that we hold adequate general liability, personal accident and protector liability insurance, as provided to all South East Queensland Catchments Members Association (SEQCMA) members from State funds managed by Queensland Water & Land Carers (QWaLC).
Newsletters
We publish four informative newsletters each year which are distributed to our members. Starting as a single A4 sheet, 1997, our newsletter has grown to an 8 page newsletter with colour photos featuring a mix of scientific and general information about catchment and ways of caring for it. Through it we aim to inform and motivate the community to actively participate in improving the local environment. An archive of past newsletters is available on our website and our Newsletter Editor, Cathi Lawrence is always looking for new contributors.
