The Nursery
The Nursery exists to provide members of the Moggill Creek and Pullen Pullen Catchments Groups with free local native plants so that they can revegetate their land. While the main focus has been towards helping acreage landholders, we also provide free plants to members living on suburban blocks in the district. Many of our native plants are suitable for use in landscaping as ornamentals and/or to attract birds and butterflies.
Plants are free of charge to members of the Moggill Creek and Pullen Pullen Catchments Groups, with the exception of the Birdwing Butterfly Vine (Pararistolochia praevenosa). Specimens of this endangered plant cost $8 per pot and are made available in larger pots at an age of 2-4 years.
There is no upper limit to the number of plants you may take from the nursery, but it is to be hoped you will not take more than you can reasonably look after.
The nursery started from small beginnings in 1999 under our first co-ordinator Michael Reif and is now a substantial operation, giving away between 12,000 and 15,000 plants to members every year.

Plants available at the nursery
Plants of approximately 200 species native to the Moggill Creek and Pullen Pullen Catchments are grown at the nursery. There is no definitive list of the plants in stock at the Nursery as it changes significantly from week to week, depending on supply and demand, but in general you will always find a good selection of rainforest and eucalypt woodland trees, shrubs, grasses and herbaceous (groundcover) plants in a range of species.
A list including many of the local plant species for the Brookfield-Pullenvale-Moggill district, accompanied by illustrations, can be found in “Putting Back the Forest: A Landcare guide for Brookfield, Pullenvale and Moggill” Hacker, B., Butler, R. and Rekdahl, R. Established plantings of many of the plants available at the Nursery can be viewed at the MCCG Cottage. The Cottage Garden was established in order to work out which of the plants native to the catchment are suitable for landscaping purposes on residential blocks. Currently we have under cultivation a wide range of species. These are labelled with their common and scientific names. Nearby there is a small arboretum with most of the eucalypts and eucaplypt allies of our catchment. These too are labelled.
You are welcome to view the Cottage Garden at any time. Occasional official tours are arranged to discuss the progress of the project.
Making the most of your trip to the nursery
There will always be a knowledgeable volunteer available to assist you with selection of your plants.
It is a good idea to do some preparation before your visit. Decide in advance what type of plants you are after – large trees, smaller trees, shrubs, grasses or groundcovers.
Established examples of many of the plants available are planted in the Cottage Garden. Most are labelled.
It’s also a good idea to bring a box in which to carry your plants away!

Nursery volunteers
The MCCG Nursery is managed and staffed by volunteers from the Moggill Creek and Pullen Pullen Catchments Groups who generally meet on the first and third Mondays of each month from 9 am to 12 noon. Morning tea is provided, generally with home baked cakes. Tasks performed by volunteers include seed collection and germination, sowing of seed, potting up seedlings, weeding and general nursery maintenance.
